Elon Musk's Neuralink has received FDA clearance for its first human clinical trial- marking a significant milestone for the brain-implant startup.
The approval is viewed as an important first step in developing technology that can potentially help many people. However, the company has faced criticism for rushing and botching animal surgeries in the pursuit of FDA approval.
Neuralink originally hoped to implant its device in 10 patients, but, has had to negotiate a lower number due to safety concerns raised by the agency. It is unclear how many patients have ultimately been approved for the trial. Elon Musk envisions that brain implants could cure a range of conditions, and even enable web browsing and telepathy, despite initial rejection from the FDA due to safety concerns regarding the device's lithium battery and potential issues with the implant's wires migrating within the brain.
