Creality Ender 7 Assembly, Setup, Slicer Settings, Review and First Prints!

In this video I will be walking you through the setup and assembly of the Creality Ender 7 3D printer! I will provide you with tips and suggestions along the way that you will not find in the user manual, and also take you through my slicer settings to get you the best print results avoiding frustration!

The Creality Ender 7 is marketed as a printer built for speed. Although this appears to be the case based on the CoreXY motion system, large XY stepper motors and drivers, and high flow rate hot end, it seems to fall short of the advertised 250mm/s print speed. And this is simply due to the fact that Creality has very conservative machine limit settings in the firmware. The printer simply cannot accelerate fast enough with those settings to cut down on print time for small prints.

This can easily be changed and you can get the printer moving quite a bit faster without any further modifications out of the box. Overall, you can get very respectable print quality at ~80mm/s external perimeters, and 125mm/s speeds for internal features. This is still better than most other consumer grade printers on the market today.

With a large enough print, you can get the print head moving up to 250mm/s and the extruder/hot end combination will keep up, but don't expect exceptional quality of your print surfaces at this speed.

When attempting to run very high speeds and accelerations, I noticed that quality is lost on sharp corners (as one would expect) and the printer would greatly benefit from some advanced compensation techniques like linear / pressure advance.

The Z motion system also leaves something to be desired as it is fully cantilevered and the free end of the bed support sags. The adjustment screws and knobs will allow you to properly level the print bed, but it is very evident that you have to unscrew the front knobs much more to compensate. The use of V-wheels on the cantilevered Z motion system was also a questionable design choice. Despite all of this, the printer still manages to make very nice prints and there are no Z artifacts surprisingly.

In future videos I plan to address several of the Creality Ender 7 shortcomings. Namely, I have already designed and prototyped a 3 point linear rod and lead screw system for this printer to eliminate the bed sag and increase the lateral stability of the print bed. After that, I will be installing Klipper and trying to do a more advanced tune and control for this printer in hopes of achieving much higher speeds while maintaining quality. Perhaps a direct drive extruder and hot end are also in the works!

Overall, the Creality Ender 7 is a well built machine with a lot of potential. There are some issues that need to be addressed but stick with me and we will get this printer flying!
