What happens when a former engineer attempts to bring a hacker ethos to the humanities? This workshop will explore the use of modern computing power and rapid prototyping as tools for the development of philosophical theories and new learning experiences. Inspired by sources as diverse as the advent of deep learning and open source hardware, the radical empiricism of William James, Aristotle's view of space as a plenum, quantum theory, the geometrical models of the Goettingen mathematical institute, catastrophe optics, relational algebra, stochastic sound-art, and lasers, Pashby and his team of research assistants set about developing art works and computer models to provide rich experiential access to esoteric philosophical ideas and advance research in the philosophy of physics. Pashby will also share practical advice to set up one's own personal hack arts lab on a shoestring budget.
