Time to shed weight & save money by building a full body, articulated scale RC helicopter pilot. If you have a 3D printer or know someone who does, this is a fairly simple, straight forward & fun project.

For this build, I used an inexpensive GI Jane helicopter pilot as the source for the head, hands, helmet, flight suit & boots; but any articulated action figure or doll of a similar scale you are working with could be used. Even low cost RC pilot busts could be used for the head. Lots of options in other words.

I then 3D modeled an articulated scale pilot body and printed it out in PLA to save as much weight as possible.

A low cost, light weight, analog, plastic gear micro servo is placed inside the full body scale RC helicopter pilot to produce head movement. This was the most fun part of the entire project to see in action.

This build allows you to custom size your full body scale RC helicopter pilot to precisely fit your specific scale RC helicopter & cockpit/seat. It could also however be used for any scale RC model requiring a full body scale pilot.

At 1/2 to 1/4 the cost of commercially available full body scale RC pilots, this project not allows a totally custom fit light weight pilot for your model, it saves money too. All that is required is some time working at the RC workbench - something most of us enjoy :)
