We’ve got a channel-first with this episode; we’re going on location today! In this episode, I’m going to describe the process I went through to realize that I could use 3D printing to solve a guitar design problem.
Last season, we did a mini-series describing the research, buying, and adjustment process for the multiscale bass that I have. At the time, I really liked the unique playing experience. However, after continuing to play if for months and months, I began to notice something that ended up frustrating me more and more. With angled pickups (to match the angled frets), I had nowhere solid to rest the thumb of my plucking hand! After some thought, I decided that I could address the issue by 3D printing a guitar mod to sort of “re-angle” the top of the pickup to be more comfortable.
I was able to partner with Dr. Neil Rothman of Stevenson University who graciously agreed to help with the project. He was able to take the design and dimensions I sent him and create a 3D model of the exact guitar mod I was seeing in my head. From there, Dr. Rothman used his 3D printer to fully realize this piece in a carbon fiber reinforced, nylon guitar mod!
Since the dimensions and modeling software was so precise, the mod fits like a dream and once I got it back to the studio, I had it installed and was playing in a matter of minutes.

We couldn’t have done this without Dr. Rothman’s generous help so make sure you check out all of his info, and websites for the program he runs, down below!!
As always, thanks for watching and play on my friends, play on!!
