Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course is an introduction to polymer science and provides a broad overview over various aspects of polymers, from synthetic methods, via polymer physics and materials properties to processing into products. The overarching aim of the course is to connect molecular properties and chain architecutres of polymers with resulting macroscopic properties.

This lectureis the second part of the polymer processing chapter. We discuss some more ways on how to generate functional polymer materials and coatings. Photolithography is one of the very first steps in the production of microchips. We discuss the chemical foundations underpinning the UV light-induced patterning of thin polymer films created by spin coating. We then look into how polymer coatings can be formed on substrates and discuss solvent- and dispersion-based approaches. Finally, I will provide a short overview on how polymeric materials can be fabricated by additive manufacturing processes.
