My husband has been wanting to get a 3D printer for awhile now. He’s a big tech person and loves to tinker with new toys.
We saw some friends printing and donating 3D mask extenders for doctors, nurses and first responder friends so he wanted to do the same and give back to the community.
He also has a lot of friends who brew their own beers and wanted to make them beer tap handles, as well as golf ball marker molds to mark his and his friend’s golf balls with cool logos.
The possibilities are endless! Out of the box, this 3D printer does require some assembly. With my help, it took him about 45 minutes to assemble because there were a lot of parts and he wanted to make sure to be precise in putting this together.
What’s nice is that this comes with all of the tools that you need to put this together including wrenches and Allen keys so you will not need any separate tools.
Be careful because the aluminum heat pad moves on wheels, so a good tip is to remove the glass on top while assembling this so that it doesn’t move around and potentially break and to re-attach the glass when completed.
Why my husband chose this 3D printer is because it has independent dual extruders for more flexibility and there are three (3) different print modes: dual mode, duplicate mode and mirror mode.
Dual mode allows him to print one (1) model using both print heads with two (2) different colors or one (1) model using two (2) different types of filament.
He can also just print one (1) model using one (1) printhead if he chooses. Duplicate mode is when both printheads print the same model at the same time which saves time and can print (2) items in half the time.
This mode is great when you have to make several of the same model like mask extenders. Lastly, mirror mode is when both printheads print the same model but is moving on the X axis in the opposite direction, like it’s name indicates, “mirrors” each other.
A great example of this would be to print slippers or plastic shoes. When assembling, it is very important that you correctly connect the labeled printhead to its corresponding connector or else this machine will not work properly.
This comes with a power adaptor to plug into an electrical outlet. To turn on, press the on/off power switch on the right hand side. There is a 4.3 inch color touch screen display on the front to operate the machine.
On the left side, there is a USB connector and memory card slot. The X and Z motors are located on the back side and the X carriage runs on a linear guide and moves using independent belts.
The X and Z axis end stops are equipped with a couple of optic sensors for the Z axis with one on each side and a couple of optic sensors for the X axis with one on each side as well.
Only the Y axis end stop is a mechanical switch and it is located at the back side of the Y axis. There are extruder cables that are connected on the right side which you will need to connect to the E1 printhead.
