Europe has got its first 3-D printed house in Eindhoven

Project milestone celebrates the completion of its long-awaited 3D printed house in eindhoven, the netherlands. today, a dutch couple receives their keys as they move in, calling the milestone work of architecture home. marked by its organic geometry, the concrete dwelling is designed to recall the form of a large boulder — a testament to the design-minded possibilities of 3D printed building methods over traditional residential construction. the project marks europe’s first legally habitable property with load-bearing walls made using 3D-printing technology.
Project milestone‘s newly completed 3D printed house in eindhoven stands as a hybrid of formal design and traditional residential programming. the detached single-story home, with just over one thousand square feet of net floor area, hosts a spacious living room and two bedrooms. recalling a monolithic landform found in nature, the house demonstrates the freedom of form that is offered by 3D concrete printing. with extra thick insulation and a connection to the heat grid, the home is very comfortable and energy efficient.
The design team at project milestone intentionally set the bar high by designing the eindhoven 3D printed house with an irregular form. in recent years, the necessary research and development has been undertaken to make concrete printing possible in a range of forms. while the inclining walls were notably challenging to print, the technique has now been mastered by the design/build team. completing the didactic project, the door has been opened to a type of construction completely different from the typical rectangular houses.
the team notes that printed homes can now be built faster and with more flexibility and personalized designs. the method has even proven more environmentally sustainable as less concrete is needed. the ambition of the project milestone partners is for 3D concrete printing to eventually become a sustainable construction method that contributes to solving the housing shortage. the newly completed house in eindhoven marks the first of five that project milestone plans to build — one at a time, each new round of construction will maximize the learning opportunities from the previous. soon, the project partners will begin work on the design of the next homes, which will have multiple floors and therefore require further investigation.
