Desktop Health’s Flexcera Receives FDA Clearance for Dental! A Step Forward for Medical 3D Printing

Desktop Metal’s health science division, Desktop Health has just received FDA clearance for its new Flexcera material. If that sounds familiar, that's because this company is Desktop Metal’s healthcare focused subrand which specializes in AM solutions for the medical industry. Also known as….. Some old form of EnvisionTEC, or at least, the technology they’re using was birthed from that new acquisition.

Flexcera Base is a photosensitive resin for dental prosthetics. Flexcera Base joins the Flexcera Smile to form Desktop Health’s first optimized digital dental solution.

“Three years ago, we set out to create a product that addressed the limitations of current 3D printed dental prosthetics – brittleness and poor aesthetics,” said Michael Jafar, President & CEO of Desktop Health.

The dental prosthetics sector is a huge one -- lots of talk about this lately -- it’s currently on the rise with the global dentures market estimated to reach $3.8 billion by 2027. That’s just DENTURES. In the US, more than 36 million people use dentures every day. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, 69 percent of adults aged 35 to 44 have lost at least one permanent tooth to an accident, gum disease, a failed root canal or tooth decay.

Flexcera was developed with the strength of ceramic materials and further optimized for use in dentures. When used with EnvisionTEC 3D printers, dental providers can print up to eight customized Flexcera dentures in less than two hours! And that’s been one of the biggest benefits to pretty much every industry, customizability and complexity with faster lead times and lower part costs! Looks like they’re treading on Formlabs turf, now, too!

Going back to the dentures, Flexcera offers high fracture and moisture resistance, making these dental prosthetics more durable and less prone to staining or discoloration.
