COVID-19 update, Jan 4: Japan considers state of emergency for Tokyo as outbreak worsens

Tokyo could be heading for another COVID-19 state of emergency. Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has said he is ready to impose tough restrictions as the coronavirus outbreak in the capital worsens. On Jan 4, Tokyo reported more than 800 new infections for the third straight day. The emergency will cover Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures and could take effect as early as Jan 9 and last for a month.
